I didn't see it either, 'til it was pointed out. The closest I got was to wonder how old the bonsai was. I guess you get used to them being in very small pots, but as Jack said - this one was impossibly small!

Hi, everyone!
It was another lovely autumn day here on the island, so I took my camera with me when I took Joey for his walks. First we went to the airport, Joey's favourite place (no kidding - he positively grins when we pull into the parking lot there!) because for some odd reason, he loves to roll on the grass there! He jumps out of the car and races to a spot underneath 2 trees that look like giant junipers to me where he rolls and rolls! He doesn't react like that anywhere else!
Anyway, while walking about there, I took a couple of pictures of some fungi that were growing in the lawn. Those are the first 2 pics.
After that, we went to one of the riverside trails where I found some more fungi to photograph in between checking that dear Joey wasn't rolling in any salmon carcasses. Personally, I didn't see any, but the smell of them was strong in the air!
I also took a general shot of the spot where we were walking to show you. Actually, I had hoped to get a picture of the young bald eagles that feed there, but none were to be seen today. Earlier, though, a buck deer stood and looked into the car window while I was at a stop sign, but I was so busy holding Joey back that I couldn't handle the camera!
Well, those were the highlights of MY day! Ain't retirement grand??
Cheers!

Oh good gracious, those are some amazing mums! Oh to have the time and patience to tie down each and every flower in the right place! The effect is out of this world though... I would love a mum christmas tree!

Hello everyone,
It was another one of those wonderful sunny but crisp Autumn days here so I took a friend and the dogs a few miles out of town to one of the local lakes where we get our city's water supply along with the water for the local power station. It's a recreational area, with boat launches and camping/picnicking areas. I haven't been there for a few years, so it was nice to return on such a lovely day.
Here are some pictures of the area for you; just remember that a few hundred kilometres away, in the Interior, winter is arriving and it has been snowing unlike here. In a month or so, snow will come also to this area and the smaller lakes will freeze over, although I don't think that this large one freezes.
All the best to everyone!

Buttle Lake 1.jpg
This is a view across Buttle Lake, which is a combined power reservoir and recreational lake. We get a lot of our city's water from here. The road leads to a molybdenum mine, the product of which is shipped around the world.

A slight turn to the right and we see the road leading back to town. High on the cliffs are Arbutus (Madrona in the U.S.) trees. Rather high in altitude for them - quite a surprise to see them up here!

A closer view of an Arbutus (that's the one with the orange bark). They love rocky areas like this and seldom are found anywhere else than amid the rocks.

Looks like a fine day for walking. Joey and his buddy look happy, and what dog wouldn't be on a walk with swimming opportunities.
You got me on the bonzai. I think of them often growing in very small containers so nothing registered as strange there.
Retirement does sound grand and I hope to have one yet.

Lovely walk, and lovely fungi!20 Nov '08 3:10 am
Interesting pics, and for once you caught Joey off guard (as has Mark with Fletcher!) and he really is looking good. Funny how, like us, some dogs love cameras and others hate them!
Your arbutus are huge trees - I've never seen them here as more than largish shrubs. A. anendus (sp?) is the only one I've ever found here.
On our walk to the farm on Monday we crossed the sports field - after weeks of wet it was more covered in fungi than I've ever seen anything - about 5 kinds, with hardly a clean square meter. I couldn't help thinking that a rugby tackle could prove lethal unless the players kept their jaws tightly clamped!
