6 Jul '08 8:13 pm Canadian friends think we're hopeless cos nobody can cope (i.e. drive, walk, anything) in snow. We aren't supposed to get lots of snow in the coastal cities!
The good news is that it doesn't usually settle for more than two or three days in places less than 200m above sea level. Well, that's the theory!
Cheers, and thanks for the link. M

Brrr is right!
6 Jul '08 8:54 pm I know Aucklanders have no right to winge about cold winters, but it really has been bitter up here! This photo is the aftermath of one of dozens of hailstorms that have hit us over the past few days. I know this is nothing compared to Northern Hemisphere winters (or southern New Zealand) but this is not normal for us lot!
7 Jul '08 6:43 am A phenomenem(?) all right !
Friends were driving from the Waikato, where I live, over the Kaimai ranges home to the Bay of Plenty, when they saw all the flashing warning lights at the top. They could hardly believe their eyes to see snow everywhere. The road had to be closed, but they eventually got through-took lots of photos as it has never happened before.
My family from Wellington were planning to drive up to stay (about a 6-7 hour drive)but there are only 4 roads through the North island from south to north, and they were all closed .

9 Jul '08 9:07 am After three solid weeks of torrential rain and freezing Southerlies, we awoke to this... It's still freezing but at least it's pretty!

Yes I'd say you are, Kerole.
11 Jul '08 8:24 am I see your horse is out there in the snow, just like my wife's cousin's wife (there should be a shorter name for this) in Montana. They have a covered area but are basically out all year. The snow is pretty and so odd for me to see now. Stay toasty!

Horses in winter
11 Jul '08 2:47 pm This was really just a heavy frost - I don't think it's ever snowed in Auckland. Thankfully! The temperature was around 1 degree celcius, which is pretty chilly for us lot up here. The horses live out year round but they usually have rugs on. I had taken them off to let them get some sun on their backs - later that same day it was 18 degrees celcius. I'm sure they make them tough in Montana - given half a chance, horses grow a good water/snow proof winter coat. As long as they have plenty to eat they are usually happy.
