Sissinghurst, the second garden we visited.
27 Jul '08 2:33 pm The first garden we saw was Kew in London. We took the tube to pick up a car near the airport we'd be leaving from, Heathrow. That gave me a couple of hours to get the hang of driving on the correct side of the road on the motorway.
We checked into the George Hotel in cranbrook around 2 or 3 pm and immediately took off for Sissinghurst. It was a warm, sunny day and we were only 15 or 20 minutes away. We decided to buy a membership to the National Trust, hoping to make up the value at our later garden stops.
It had a number of excellent features and I was glad to have seen it. The first two are near the entrance. The next three are of the White Garden. Then there are six of the beds and borders. Finally there is a photo of the tower and several more taken from atop the tower.

Oooh, lovely!
28 Jul '08 7:46 am Another lovely garden for me to covet. I love the tower shots. They give such a great overview of all the elements and how they fit together. Thanks Mark.

29 Jul '08 2:05 pm Me too. I don't usually get to climb up such things to get such views. Wow! It's such a treat for us in the grips of wintry weather. Sun! Green-ness! And all those lovely buildings and walls and such.
Thank you so much for brightening up the forum pages with these pictures.

I liked the tower and greenness too but
30 Jul '08 6:31 pm I had to be firm with myself about trying to bring the greenness home. We just don't get summer rain and when the snow pack in the Sierras is too low we have a draught. However, I'd gladly bring home a boatload of stones or two.
Sissinghurst had great hedges and the tower was cool but the plant combinations were pretty much out of an old Burpee's catelog, not what you'd call "inspired". I do wish I could have seen the White garden by moonlight.

White gardens
30 Jul '08 7:31 pm Just think how many white gardens 'round the world were inspired by Sissinghurst! Myself included although I use a lot of annuals to make it look a little more interesting. I think the best bit is the gorgeous stone work - the walls and archways, etc. Recreating that is another story altogether!
