What Rose is This?
16 May '08 9:00 am Hi all - I'm new to Moosey's and am still feeling my way so I'm bound to make all sorts of newby errors. Thanks for your patience in advance!
I was hoping some of you rose gurus out there could help me identify this. I have 7 of these roses as well established old standards along the front verandah of the house. The pics were taken yesterday - heavily into Autumn for us here in New Zealand, and most of the bushes are still covered in flowers but they are not the best representation.
Here goes for a description... The buds are white and long. The flowers are mid sized, and near white with a faint creamy fleshy tint to the inner bits - definitely not pure white. They don't get too pink and spotty in the rain and when full blown they have a small area of yellowy stamens in the centre. The leaves are healthy dark green - similar to iceberg. They seem to never stop flowering!
16 May '08 10:25 am Well-a question about identifying a plant is sure to get everyone going !
My guess is that the rose is 'Margaret Merrill'.If it is indeed that one,you are in good company. The late Allan Scott who was the grandfather of NZ roses, and wrote for countless years in the NZ Gardener, always said without hesitation that his favourite rose was 'Margaret Merrill'as it had'everything'

Margaret Merrill?
16 May '08 12:54 pm I would love them to be Margaret Merrills - I have heard nothing but nice things about them. But my roses have absolutely no scent - even with the nose buried in the flower.
Does Margaret Merrill have a scent?

What shows your rose nose?
16 May '08 8:07 pm Few scents seem to have as personal a response as roses. My dad can't smell some quite powerful roses. What do other people say of your standards? Are there roses that are thought of as scented that you don't really notice? It might be MM after all! I must admit that I don't know her well as she is not available here.

Smelless
17 May '08 1:59 pm These roses seem to have no scent - I have had several people smell them and no one can smell anything except a vague sort of 'planty' smell!
Nice rose site thanks Jack. I have my eye on a Hot Chocolate rose and maybe the patio equivalent, Hot Cocoa (in NZ this is known as Kiwi - some money from each rose purchased goes to help save the kiwis in the wild).

Smellless??
18 May '08 4:42 am A random thought from an English teacher - surely smell + less should have three ls?? I must remember to use that one next time I've got five minutes to fill at the end of a period. I love nothing so much as to send a class forth to disturb the next period with arguments left over from the English class

18 May '08 9:44 am This Margaret Merrill smell - I've got a couple of bargain MMs and I've never noticed them smelling. I'm sure I would have. Then again they could have been wrongly named. And they do have a Sharifa Asma close by, and this rose (Jack will agree) just overshadows all as far as nose responses go.
A silly thought - Surely the type of root stock shouldn't affect the fragrance?

MM?
22 May '08 7:35 pm Isn't it funny how some roses smell in one garden but not in another? I'm sure there's a reason for this but I don't know what it is!
If this is true, then my standards may well be MMs...but I was looking at Liza's beautiful pics of her MMs and they have pinky stamens. Mine have browny gold ones - definately not pink or red.
